Set in an industrial area, the Billabong Retail Showroom is indeed a tropical oasis radiating a Polynesian theme. And it's the tiled roof that perfectly captures the heart and soul of this iconic Australian surfwear company. Pushing the boundaries of design was an interesting but easily achievable challenge for the team at Monier Wunderlich and Hamilton Hayes Henderson Architects (www.hhh.com.au)

The Design

'There were a number of obstacles the design team conquered when building this innovative roof,' stated Lach Henderson of Hamilton Hayes Henderson Architects. 'Not only is the roof steep, but the curvature of the roof meant new systems needed to be developed. Together, Monier Wunderlich and Hamilton Hayes Henderson came up with a system of secret gutters and valleys, which made the design work.'

The Billabong roof's structure is made with steel-framed purlins, counter rafters and battens to build it up. To give the appearance of a thick, thatched roof; very thick fascia and barge boards were added. This was coupled with a secret gutter, about three tiles before the eaves' edge.

Products Used

Wunderlich Strata in Charcoal
Recently superceded by the Nullarbor, the Strata is a flat terracotta tile, allowing a stylish and distinctive look to be created while providing the longevity of colour that only terracotta offers. In line with their strong tradition of product innovation, Wunderlich have further enhanced the design of the Strata and relaunched it recently under the name of the Nullarbor. The product improvements included a revolutionary interlocking system, superior water dispersion and improved strength making it the strongest tile ever produced by Wunderlich. Wunderlich's terracotta range, now inclusive of the Nullarbor, carry a 50-Year Colour and Performance Guarantee. Consistent with the the Strata, the Nullarbor is available in a Slate Grey (Charcoal-like) colour making it an ideal choice to create a modern, contemporary look as well as replicating the look of slate.

Results
